Selected, mentored exclusively by Hall of Fame Original Highwaymen Johnny Lee Daniels. A 40-year veteran of the art and supporter, “asked A J Brown, to be his business partner” in his Highwaymen Art Gallery in Ft Pierce Florida. Highest honors are credited to Johnny who bestowed his heritage, too established A J Brown as Fort Pierce, Highwaymen Artist 2nd Generation. Highway-women are rare among both generations.
Fort Pierce, Highwaymen Artist AJ Brown carries on the Florida Highwaymen legacy. Beginning in the 1950’s, a group of black artists painted Florida, the attractive paradise that it was. “Highwaymen”, a name given later in the late 90’s, were precise for the men doing just that – selling their art along the side of major highways.
AJ Brown remember, “Harold Newton and Alfred Hair started a tradition of recruiting mostly friends and a few relatives, as they taught each other to paint; watching and learning from each other; then took to US Highway 1 to sell their recent productions, most times together, sometimes alone, sometimes in competition.
They handed down their heritage, name, and movement. Fort Pierce, Highwaymen Artist A J Brown 2nd Gen was established in 1973, continue nostalgic traditions. James Gibson a 50-year veteran, was the first who teaches A J Brown to paint the famous Red Royal Poinciana’s. His busy schedule suggested painting with Johnny, so she did. Legends witnessed as she became 2nd Gen, revealing tales of their past.
Fort Pierce, Highwaymen Artist AJ Brown is honored to be part of America’s history! May 2009, it was historic organizing the first 501c’3 formed and filed under the name, Florida Highwaymen Artist and History Center Inc. AJ says, “both generations are recognized, valued for our art; honored for our history; our endurance, and unity, crossing barriers of all times”
